GRAAFF REINET NEWS - An amount of R30 million has been allocated to the Dr Beyers Naudé municipality after submitted an application to the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs under Disaster Management to assist with water problems experienced during the current drought.
The allocation is on the basis of a business plan that was submitted. Half of this, a whopping R15m, is for an emergency water supply scheme for Graaff-Reinet, which as all residents know, is desperately needed at this time.
Also affecting Graaff-Reinet directly is an amount of R300 000 to improve the performance of the filters at the Waste Treatment Works, and R400 000 for the incremental development of an aquifer system for groundwater development.
Over R6m has been provided to install water meters in Klipplaat. At present, there are no meters in the town at all, and the municipality is thus unable to monitor the system for water usage and losses.
The remainder of the money will be spent on replacing water mains in Jansenville that can no longer be repaired (R45 000), refurbishing existing boreholes in Steytlerville (just over R2.4m), and R1.5m for future groundwater development in Rietbron.
