GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - The Graaff-Reinet community has been rocked by a recent spate of robberies, burglaries and theft from vehicles. According to police spokesperson, Captain Bradley Rawlinson, during some of these incidents, the robbers attacked and injured their victims.
Captain Rawlinson urges the community to be extremely vigilant and crime conscious.
"Criminals are looking for soft targets. Please be alert and exercise great care."
He provided the following tips:
• Never walk alone and don't talk to strangers.
• Walk in busy streets or walk in groups.
• Always let someone know if you are going to be gone for long.
• Know all the emergency numbers.
• Avoid displaying valuables such as cellular phones or wallets in back pockets - carry these in an inside pocket.
• Never talk on the phone while walking in the street.
• Never leave items of value unattended unless its locked away.
• Store valuables in a safety box or a wall safe, and ensure the key is with you while your items are locked away.
• Keep the room with the safe locked.
• If someone knocks, check who is at the door before opening.
• Make use of secure parking.
• Keep your handbag with you, and always secure it to your body.
• Do not carry large sums of cash.
• Stay away from unlit areas at night.
• Do not leave anything inside a parked vehicle.
