GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - Municipal Manager Dr Eddie Rankwana released a statement this week to say that the Dr Beyers Naudé Municipality cannot afford to replace damaged street signs.
According to Rankwana, the signs are supposed to have a lifespan of 15 years. "A recent audit found that many signs, especially in the Graaff-Reinet area, are vandalised," he said.
Rankwana claimed that 20 stop signs, 11 yield signs and four warning signs of school children have been damaged or removed, particularly in Kroonvale, Santaville and Asherville.
"Street name signs are important for the South African Post Office to deliver letters, and for the SAPS and other services to respond to emergencies," Rankwana added.
He urged community members to not vandalise municipal property, and to report such cases.
