KAROO NEWS - In a mission to get people tested for Covid-19 and to prevent the transmission of the virus, mobile testing units have been allocated by South Africa Health Minister Zweli Mkhize to the Sarah Baartman, Amathole and OR Tambo districts.
According to a statement by the Eastern Cape Health Department, the Alfred Nzo and Joe Gqabi districts will share a vehicle, as these districts do not have cases yet.
“Patients found with Covid-19 related symptoms will be quarantined and those tested positive will be admitted to hospitals for treatment,” the statement read.
According to the South African Health Department on 5 April, there are 1655 confirmed cases, of which 31 are in the Eastern Cape. It is unclear at this stage where these cases are, as this information is not released by the department.
The Advertiser is aware of two cases in Aberdeen, of which one asymptomatic patient has been transferred to Midland Hospital in Graaff-Reinet.
In addition, Eastern Cape MEC for Health, Sindiswa Gomba, and a team of health officials will visit Fameni Village in the Elliotdale Local Municipality today (6 April) to raise awareness about the virus.
“As a precautionary measure, we are taking this campaign closer to our people that are in the most remote areas of our province. The four mobile testing units will alleviate possible bottlenecks in our health facilities,” said Gomba.
Gomba encouraged locals to continue obeying the national lockdown regulations and to practice good personal hygiene. “Our health officials will continue to uphold gazetted standards by serving our nation with respect, dignity and humility”, Gomba concluded.
