GRAAFF-REINET NEWS — A local group of retired ladies have recently established a knitting initiative through which they hope to continuously create items which will benefit impoverished residents from all over Graaff-Reinet.
The group of ladies, comprised of residents from the Brenda Horwitz and Parsonage Street retirement villages, come together weekly to brainstorm and knit as a group.
The ladies intend to knit for the needy, young and old, having already received requests to knit scarves of specific colours for children from the different schools in need as well as for children from Vuyani Safe Haven and Aurora Hospital.
The group urges members of the community and businesses to donate wool or money in aid of this worthy initiative which they plan to run indefinitely so as to become somewhat of a go-to haven for those in need of a scarf, a pair of knitted booties or beanies.
They have already received donations in the form of free photocopies so that they will be able to distribute different knitting patterns to all members of the group. The ladies also knit for prem babies and donate the knits as far as Tygerberg Hospital in Cape Town.
The group also encourages people to alert them to groups or individuals in need of knitted goods.
Parties interested in donating wool or money can do so by dropping wool off at the Loop Wool Boutique located in the Karoo Trade centre in Chruch Street or at Ria Pretorius at the offices of the Parsonage Street retirement village for collection by ‘Joy’.
Those wanting to become involved as a knitter, or who would like to obtain more information on this initiative, can phone 049 892 2652.
