GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - On Thursday 17 November the Sarah Baartman District Office launched the Dr Beyers Naudé Community Safety Forum at the Alex Laign Hall in Kroonvale, Graaff-Reinet.
Under the leadership of the District Manager of Community Safety Mncedisi Boma, the safety forum covers the Sarah Baartman municipal area and will follow a multi-disciplinary approach to the prevention and combating of crime.
It is supported by Saps, the community police forum (CPF), the various neighbourhood watch groups, the business chamber and the municipality.
Boma said the launch of the forum was of utmost importance to the communities of Graaff-Reinet. He said the problems of alcohol and drug abuse can be addressed through the involvement of the CPF and with the assistance of the community.
"Although a local authority does not have a direct, specific mandate for crime prevention as it is the responsibility of Saps and the security community, closer local co-operation and support are imperative to achieve success in the fight against crime," said Boma. "Through this approach, collaborative partnerships are prioritised that will enhance and strengthen relationships and promote job creation and economic growth."
Graaff-Reinet Station Commander, Colonel Andrè Arends, said problems that communities encounter should be heard and addressed. "We are taking the lead in the district, and I am sure the forum will assist the police in promoting safety according to a predetermined plan," said Arends. "Consultation and collaboration in a structure where each participant's role is well-defined and where integrated plans are well coordinated will contribute to a safer environment."
Hento Davids said business is suffering as it is affected by crime and that communities should get involved and support the initiative.
Chief Director of Community Safety Pumla Nqakula said the CPF is key in the fight against crime. "Regular interaction between role players and the community will improve service delivery. The forum does not replace or compete with the community police forums but will work closely with all facets of the security community," she explained. She said promoting effective communication between all security sectors and proactive crime measures are crucial. Parents should be involved in resolving issues involving children. Nqakula suggested the formation of street committees to address these issues.
Nqakula commended Sergeant Alice Africa and Constable Zukisani Rala for their dedication, teamwork, and problem-solving.
Community leader and philanthropist Anele Ngoyo thanked all councillors, senior police officers, community members and role players for attending the launch.
