GRAAFF-REINET ADVERTISER - The once non-functional Graaff-Reinet emergency helicopter pad on Albertyn Street, Graaff-Reinet, is evolving into a fully operational helipad, where emergency services' helicopters can land in aid of saving lives.
This week, a member of the Graaff-Reinet community, who wished to remain anonymous, donated lighting to ensure that the helipad can be used at all times. The lights were installed on the roof of the nearby pathology services.
The Advertiser reported in April about the need to rebuild the once-forgotten resource. The plea was adhered to and several businessmen and individuals, as well as Correctional Services and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) committed themselves to its restoration.
On 2 July this year, 12 years after the helipad was last used, Port Elizabeth EMS helicopter pilot, Captain Oggie Willats, was able to transfer a sick two-day-old baby from Graaff-Reinet to Port-Elizabeth.
Jacque Wagener, the coordinator of the helipad's maintenance, said they must now reseal the repaired helipad and spray poison to kill weed before resealing.
Residents who can help finalise this process can contact Wagener on 066 303 8844.
The bright lights have been a tremendous help.
