GRAAFF-REINET NEWS AND VIDEO - In light of Covid-19 and the nationwide lockdown, the Graaff-Reinet SAPS are busy taking homeless people of the town to the Alexander Laing Community Hall for safety.
According to Edwardine Abader, Acting Spokesperson for the Dr Beyers Naudé Municipality, the hall has been identified as a place of safety for the homeless and people in need during the 21-day lock down.
Those who can give proof of residence are allowed to go back to their homes.
Except for the police on the scene, medical personnel, municipal officials and security personnel are also settling in at the offices of the community hall.
Corene Conradie, coordinator of the Gift of the Givers in Graaff-Reinet, also arrived with a food donation for the homeless.
Conradie said they will monitor the situation and try to provide food and sanitary items on a daily basis.
At about 15:30, approximately 30 people were dropped off at the community hall.
