GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - Kids have some of the most fun while being messy, and one of the best moments in a parent’s life is when their little one does something to make them proud.
In Kid ART, Amie Tarr, a Grade 1 teacher at Union Preparatory School in Graaff-Reinet, marries these two prospects and gives children the space to enjoy themselves while producing something amazing from nothing.
Kid ART teaches children from as young as six years of age about the art of making art and the joy of exploring and experimenting creatively.
A passionate art instructor and teacher, Amie finds it incredibly rewarding to watch the positive change in, what she calls, “her” children.
“In the first week they’ll come in and fiddle with everything but their canvas,” says Amie, “and then a few classes in they can sit down and paint for the full 45 minutes!”.
What’s more, the classes also reveal hidden talents and build self-esteem.
It’s this emphasis on building kids up and instilling them with important lessons that makes these art classes so special. Aside from having lots of fun, the kids learn significant life skills, like how to focus and share and how to practise patience.
As there’s a maximum of 12 children in a class, Amie is able to dedicate personal attention to each little one.

The exact pieces that the children create depends on the age group that they’re in. Little ones aged 6 to 10 years work in various mediums during their weekly art classes: paper, oil pastel and acrylics.
The older grades (Grade 5 to 12) have two different weekly classes to choose from: either individual or small group classes, which are available outside of school hours at negotiable times.
Kid ART really goes the extra mile to give the kids a memorable and positive creative experience and to instil pride in them about their pieces, therefore, twice a year, Kid Art holds an open exhibition and mounts little ones’ paintings and sketches in a venue for everyone to see.
Grade 1-4 Weekly class times: Wednesdays: 14:15 – 15:00 and 15:00 – 15:45 and Thursdays: 15:00 – 15:45.
