GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - The president, in his address to the nation on Sunday 28 February, announced that the country will ease into Adjusted Alert Level 1 as of midnight 28 February. New regulations were published by Government Notice No. R152 of 28, issued on 28 February with effect from 1 March.
The Covid-19 statistics as at 5 March, indicates that the Dr Beyers Naude Local Municipality has 2 new cases and a total of 3 active cases.
I want to caution members of the community to not get complacent but rather continue to adhere to the regulations as stipulated, i.e. wearing a mask, social distancing and continuous washing or sanitizing of hands.
The virus is still among us and it is our responsibility to combat a third wave from recurring.
Vandalism and theft
Vandalism and theft continues to be a major problem in our municipal area. Another case of vandalism and theft of electrical lines was reported on 5 March which affected the Adendorp area in Graaff-Reinet.
I intend to have a meeting with SAPS to address the seriousness of the matter and assistance with urgent intervention to curb the new tendency to vandalise municipal property.
Communities must be aware that vandalising of government property is a serious offense with a penalty of up to 30 years imprisonment. It is time to stand together against these acts and communities are urged to report should they have any information.
Service delays
Communities must have noticed a delay in service delivery in their respective areas. This was due to internal difficulties experienced. The matter has been addressed and service delivery departments are operational.
Municipal employees are working hard to address the backlog whilst also attending to daily schedules.
To date there is no confirmed plan for our area for the roll out of Covid-19 vaccination. As soon as the plan is available, it will be communicated to communities.
We have chosen vaccination and we call on all to choose vaccination and protect one another.
