ABERDEEN NEWS — Late on Thursday morning, 23 August, a young man walking across the veld found two bundles of mail lying in the veld near the road that runs between the two Aberdeen townships.
It looked as though most of the mail was addressed to people in Sithandiwe Street, Thembalesizwe, and it was found on the Lotusville (the other township) side of the main road.
The young man contacted Councillor Rudy Jacobs, and the two men took the mail to the post office and gave it to the postmistress. She thanked them for handing it in and told them that she would ask the postman who delivers the mail about it.
Cllr Jacobs is very concerned that mail can be left just lying in the veld, in an area strewn with litter. It was still neatly bundled, and it was estimated that there were about 80 or so items of mail, many of which looked like store accounts.
The Advertiser was referred to the Communications Division of SA Post Office, and a response was received from National Senior Delivery Manager Johan Kruger.
According to Kruger, the postman in Aberdeen’s explanation was that he had an enormous volume of mail on the day concerned, so his mailbag was overflowing. He, therefore, left the undelivered mail in what he felt was a safe spot with the intention to return later and deliver it. “His service record up till now gives us no reason to doubt his word,” said Kruger “so we have therefore requested him to in future leave excess mail at the post office branch where it is definitely safe. He can then return to the branch when he has delivered the first round of mail.”
Kruger concluded his response by thanking the young man who found the mail for being a caring and responsible citizen.
