HOFMEYR NUUS - The State Veterinary Surgeon again visited Hofmeyr last week and it was established that a further 70 dogs have died due to canine distemper.
Lin Opperman, a retired teacher, renowned artist, and animal lover, says 20 sick dogs were euthanised.
"Many more were vaccinated against the virus. We are sadly still struggling with a situation where many owners refuse to have their dogs vaccinated," she says.
"It is with sincere gratitude that I wish to extend my thanks to all who contributed financially to assist the Hofmeyr community with this huge crisis. We used the money to pay for vaccines, as well as for transport for the deceased animals as well as for the people who were employed to bury the dogs.
"We wish to acknowledge the involvement of local volunteers who assisted during this trying time, as well as veterinarian surgeons who travelled from Cradock and Middelburg to assist.
"Local people who assisted and are still assisting are Messrs Schoeman, Ferreira, Andrews, Mawethu and Lumko. Thank you for each grave you dug, and for each burial you assisted with. We are grateful for your assistance," Opperman says.
