MIDDELBURG NEWSFLASH - The wild olive avenue next to the main entrance of the Grootfontein College of Agriculture in Middelburg, is said to be the oldest and tallest avenue of wild olive trees in South Africa.
It is further argued that it is also the longest wild olive avenue in the country.
The avenue measures approximately 150 meters.
One side counts 12 trees, the other side 13 trees.
The avenue was planted in the year 1937 by George Gill, the college’s horticulturist at the time.
Frost-, drought- and wind-resistant, the wild olive – known as Olienhout in Afrikaans - has beautiful wood for furniture, and is regarded as a small-fruited subspecies of the commercial olive.
