GRAAFF-REINET NUUS - There is still no light at the end of the tunnel for Dr Beyers Naude municipal workers whose pension fund contributions have not been paid to their pension fund, but the Commercial Crimes Unit (CCU) is zooming in.
Last week Member of Parliament, Samantha Graham-Maré, met with the investigation officer of the CCU in Gqeberha to discuss the charge brought against Municipal Manager Dr Eddie Rankwana in his capacity as accounting officer.
Graham-Maré is putting together a portfolio of evidence against the municipality in this regard, and the unit is investigating the case. Graham-Maré has also submitted a follow-up question to Minister of Finance Tito Mboweni, asking how his ministry intends to ensure that the arrears are paid over. She is awaiting Mboweni's response.
At this stage it is unclear whether the outstanding pension fund amount of nearly R26-million includes interest.
Meanwhile, Graham-Maré has received a report that the municipality has paid over the September and October 2019 contributions to the fund.
