COOKHOUSE NEWS - Just one week before the alcohol ban was lifted by President Cyril Ramaphosa on Monday night, the Cookhouse Police arrested a 31-year-old man who transported alcohol in a white VW Caddy bakkie in contravention of Covid-19 regulations.
While on route patrol on on Tuesday 26 January, the Cookhouse Police and Community Service Centre members were informed that the bakkie travelling near Cookhouse, had black market alcohol on board.
The driver of the vehicle tried to evade the police, but the bakkie was eventually stopped on the N10 outside the town. The driver then attempted to run away, but was apprehended.
The police recovered 406 bottles of alcohol, boxes of wine as well as bags of wine, informally referred to as 'papsakke'. A total of 802 liters of alchohol with an estimated street value of R20 000 were confiscated.
The luckless man was set to appear in the Somerset East Magistrates Court.
