GRAAFF-REINET NEWS – A collision between a courier vehicle and a motorcycle on the N9 near Graaff-Reinet claimed the life of a young man from Graaff-Reinet yesterday afternoon.
Loyiso Swartbooi (20) was on his way to Graaff-Reinet from Middelburg on his motorcycle when, at just after 13:30, 15km from Graaff-Reinet, a delivery vehicle, that was allegedly swerving to avoid another vehicle, hit him head-on.
Loyiso, who was a student at the Grootfontein College of Agriculture, had a passenger riding pillion with him on the motorcycle. The passenger, aged 18, was a student at the college as well.
Loyiso and his passenger died on impact.
The identity of the passenger has yet to be confirmed.
Loyiso, whose parents reside in Graaff-Reinet, was well-known in the community and well-loved as can be attested to by all the tributes that have been flooding social media since his death.
One such tribute describes Loyiso as “an outstanding young agricultural student, with an unwavering passion and positive outlook on farming matters, who gave all so much hope for a better South Africa”.
The driver of the courier vehicle was transported to the Midlands Hospital for treatment.
