ABERDEEN NEWS — Seven property-related crimes were reported in Aberdeen in the last two weeks.
Fencing poles were stolen from the yard of a house in Van Zyl Street, Lotusville, on July 28. A case of theft was opened, and forty-year-old man has been arrested as a result of information received by the police.
Sometime over the weekend of July 29 and 30, a generator was stolen from the farm Dowerfontein. The generator had been standing out in the open, and its theft was discovered on the Monday morning. The value of the stolen item is R7 000.
A robbery occurred in town on the morning of Saturday, July 28, in Van Riebeeck Street behind ABSA bank. A man, who owed money to a microlender, went to see her to explain that he did not have money to pay what he owed. He was accompanied by his partner. The loan shark saw that the man’s partner had money tucked away inside her clothing, and reached into the woman’s blouse and took the money. There was a total of R600: she kept R400, and gave the woman R200 back. The 46-year-old suspect was arrested on Wednesday.
In another theft case, on the same day, an arrest was made by the complainant in the case. He was drinking with the 20-year-old suspect at his father-in-law’s house, and the suspect fell asleep. A little later, the suspect was seen taking a 10kg bag of bread flour. The complainant detained him, and called the police who fetched him and took him to the station.
The police would like to remind members of the public that they have the power to make a citizen’s arrest, if they witness an offence being committed.
On Wednesday, August 2, a case of housebreaking and theft was reported in Jackson Street. The house is currently unoccupied, as the owner and her daughter are both working away. The break-in was discovered by the person looking after the house, who found that a back window had been forced open. It is not known at this stage what has been taken.
A business robbery occurred last Sunday evening in a shop in Zingisa Street, Thembalesizwe. Two men entered the shop, and threatened the owner with a knife. Cigarettes and cash were taken before the men fled the scene. The owner, who recognised one of the men, called the police, and one suspect was arrested. When the man was searched, he was found to be carrying dagga, so a case of possession of dagga has been added to the charge of theft.
A case of malicious damage to property was opened after an incident in North Street on 2nd August. Two men had an argument, and a brick was thrown at the windscreen of one of the men’s vehicle. One of the men involved is currently in Groot Brak, and still has to be interviewed by the investigating officer.
Finally, there was a case of reckless and negligent driving opened after an Iveco minibus travelling on the R61 from Beaufort West towards Aberdeen overturned about 60km from Aberdeen. No other vehicle was involved –according to the driver, he swerved to aoid a kudu, and lost control of the vehicle. Two people were seriously injured in the accident, and the other passengers were treated for their injuries and discharged.
The origin and destination of the vehicle is not known.
