ABERDEEN NEWS NEWS - Many people have expressed disappointment that several trees in Grey Street, towards the cemetery, have recently been cut down, leaving substantial stumps.
It was generally thought that the householder had done this to allow the winter sun into his house, but those objecting felt that it was unnecessary to destroy mature trees which provide shade.
It appears that it is this shade that has been the reason for the owner of the property wanting the trees removed. He complained that many people used the shade of the trees to sit and drink, as it is just around the corner from the bottle store.
He asked at the municipal offices whether the trees could be removed, and as they were alien, not indigenous, it was agreed that they could be chopped down.
In another tree-related problem, several stop signs, particularly on the lower side of town, are obscured by the very healthy growth of trees or bushes.
Although these are not major roads, it is a cause for concern especially for visitors in town. The municipality has embarked on a project to clear excess vegetation that is obscuring signs and urges residents who see problem areas to please report them.
