GRAAFF-REINET NEWS — On Sunday night Erma Voigt of the Camdeboo Sterilisation Initiative (CSI) in Graaff-Reinet received a call from a concerned motorist that a tortoise had been injured about 15km out of town, most likely run over by a vehicle, and was in agony at the side of the road.
The injured tortoise was brought into town for assessment of the injuries and kindly taken in by Greg Kappers. Little did CSI know what they had let themselves in for!
When an egg appeared shortly afterwards, there was much frantic searching on Google about what to do with newly laid tortoise eggs - this is not in CSI’s normal field of expertise! After eight little “Skillies-to-be” had appeared, “midwives” Greg and Dariza were exhausted, and very concerned for Mom and the little ones to be.
On Monday morning Mom Skillie and her eight eggs were taken to the Tortoise Rehab Centre and Sanctuary in Somerset East where she will get specialist care, and her little ones will be incubated under the watchful eye of Gia de Goede.
CSI would like to thank Lindie and Jessica Dry for taking the time and trouble to rescue injured Mommy Skillie from the side of the road, and Greg for making the trip to get this family to safety and care.
