GRAAFF-REINET NEWS — The organisers of the recent three-day Strawdogs Rally are very pleased with the success of the event, with "over 1 000 motorbikes and about 1 200 people attending in total".
They appreciated the enthusiastic support of local people, including the local bike club, the Reapers, who acted as marshals and showed their enthusiasm.
Several local people were also employed for security work, at the caravan park and for cleaning up after the drag racing, and their willingness to work and diligence were appreciated.
Many members of the community came out to see the stunts on Saturday morning, and the drag racing, which was held near the entrance to the airstrip, proved a popular event.
The organisers were pleased that the venue for the drag racing was such that they were able to confine spectators behind existing fencing.
The feedback from the participants was once again very positive, and many commented that they found Graaff-Reinet to be a very biker-friendly town, and appreciated the welcoming attitude of the locals.
Opinion from local residents, however, seems very much divided, with some enjoying the events and appreciating the revenue brought into the town, whereas others are very much against the disruption caused.
The Advertiser has received some specific concerns and complaints which are being followed up with the relevant authorities - these will be addressed in next week’s issue.
The final auditing of the funds received from the event is underway, and President of Strawdogs, Larry Oliver, plans to return with members next month to hand of donations to the designated charities.
