NIEU-BETHESDA NEWS — The “Hike and Hobble for Hospice” is a noteworthy charity walk that follows the roughly 50km route between the top of Ouberg Pass, to Rietpoort farm and on towards Nieu-Bethesda.
Three friends from the Nieu-Bethesda area, Lisa Watermeyer, Andoret Wolfaardt and Lynette McClaggan, all completed the trail over two days and thoroughly enjoyed the privilege of walking the backroads of the unspoiled Karoo.
On the first day the walkers were accompanied by cyclists, hunters, horseriders, bearers of muffins and coffee, and even a small plane as they made their way towards Rietpoort - the farm of Doug and Liz Stern. According to Andoret Wolfaardt the camaraderie, exquisite landscape and wonderful fellowship allowed walkers to forget about tiring, and they simply relished in every second of the journey.
The second day took the ladies up hill and dale and through muddy puddles indicative of the welcoming rain that had fallen the previous week. Compassberg showed her iconic face as they made their way from Riverdene - and then dramatically upwards towards the hilltops surrounding Nieu-Bethesda. The breath-taking view of the village in all her Autumnal glory made for a fitting finale for this cheerful group of ladies with such a great cause front of mind. Lisa Watermeyer said, “All the walking was worth every step because of the wonderful fellowship, and knowing that those who benefit from the funds raised will be comforted in some way in their hour of need.”
A hearty supply of delicious pizzas awaited the walkers and their supporters at 'Bruno’s' at the end of the hike. The Karoo community has once again shown that they are willing to ‘walk the extra mile’ for a really good cause.
