GRAAFF-REINET NEWS — Some of Union High's Eco Club members were rewarded with an outing to Asante Sana Private Game Reserve last Friday and Saturday.
Kitty Viljoen showed the children around her organic food tunnels where she cultivates herbs, cucumbers, raspberries and much more.
On Friday evening wild animals grazed peacefully close by as the group enjoyed braaiing and watching the sunset. Soon after, load-shedding kicked in and out came the solar lamps, so dinner was enjoyed by the gentle light of solar lamps around a large farmhouse kitchen table. That evening the kids watched the moon rise over the mountain, lighting up the night sky.
Everyone slept soundly until they were woken up by the dawn birdsong. That morning, a guide took the group on a long and interesting game drive, teaching them about animal dung and tracks, different ecosystems and vegetation, and many different animals: some big, some small, some land creatures and some air creatures.
The group was also privileged to watch a 12-seater plane land on the airstrip and do some direction calculations. There was time to relax and soak up the beautiful environment before heading back to school.
These eco-warriors had a very good attendance record this term and as a reward, enjoyed two fantastic days in this natural and wild paradise.
