GRAAFF-REINET NEWS — Graaff-Reinet is in danger of losing its purple flair.
This is the opinion of local resident Hazel van Niekerk, who, this week exclaimed her dismay at the current state of the Jacaranda trees in Graaff-Reinet.
"What would our town look like in November without the beautiful blue Jacaranda?' said van Niekerk. "At close scrutiny, you will see that many of them are dying as a result of no water," she continued.
Van Niekerk urged Graaff-Reinetters to take heed of this threat to these purple beauties and to - if they are in a position to do so - please water the trees should they grow in front of their residences.
"A bucket of bath water twice a week will help tremendously," she said. "If they haven't got a basin for watering around them, please create a dam around the base of the tree to help them retain as much water as possible."
Although the Jacaranda is not indigenous to South Africa, Graaff-Reinet just wouldn't be the same without it.
"We are responsible for the survival of these trees - please help by doing your bit," van Niekerk concluded.
