ABERDEEN NEWS — Once again a slew of property-related crimes were reported to the Aberdeen police last week.
On March 18, a resident of Van Riebeeck Street was working outside, and went into the house for a break, later locking the garage. The next morning, when he opened up the garage, he discovered that three drills were missing, worth R5 000 in total. It is thought that someone jumped over the gate or the wall during the short time he was in the house. There are no suspects at this stage.
On Sunday, March 19, two bicycles, assorted tools, and one live chicken were stolen from a house in Jackson Street. There is nobody living in the house at present, but a neighbour is checking on the property regularly. He noticed that the padlock on the outbuildings had been forced open, and then discovered that the items were missing.
A resident of Mossie Street, Lotusville, was unfortunate to have both the house and garage broken into last Monday. A padlock securing the garage door was forced open, and a window was broken to allow access to the house. Two cell phones, USB memory sticks, a car jack, tools, a vacuum cleaner and two live chickens were taken, valued at just under R10 000 in all. There are two suspects under investigation at this stage, with a possible third man being implicated. The two cell phones have been returned by the suspects.
A man was arrested on Saturday for breaking into a house in Darling Street on Friday. A woman lives in the flat behind the house but was not at home at the time. When the lady who owns the house was closing some windows, she noticed a man coming out of the flat.
When she asked him what he was doing there, he said he was hungry. She immediately phoned the police, and Capt Willie van Zyl from the detective branch went to the house with members of the uniformed branch. The man ran away when he saw the police vehicle approaching, but he recognised by Capt van Zyl. Two pairs of takkies and two boxes of crockery were taken from the flat but were left behind when the suspect fled the scene. Martinus Baadjies was arrested on Saturday and appeared in court on Monday.
