NIEU-BETHESDA NEWS — Last Sunday was an auspicious occasion for St David's parish in Pienaarsig, Nieu-Bethesda.
For years, this little congregation has worshipped in the small stone church at the entrance to Pienaarsig. This heritage building is over 100 years old and was starting to show signs of serious deterioration.
Recently the Diocese of George made money available to renovate and restore this precious building for its active congregation and for the greater community. The tender was awarded to CUER projects, a small business initiative in the village, and the building has since been beautifully and sensitively restored to its former glory.
This Sunday, the community was honoured to have Bishop Brian Maharaj come to the village to bless the building.
The Bishop also confirmed some of the children of the congregation - a special day for them indeed. Resplendent in their traditional Anglican outfits of deep purple and red, the service was attended by churchgoers from as far afield as Pietermaritzburg, Klipplaat, Aberdeen, Jansenville and Graaff-Reinet.
Dorah Oliphant, lay Minister and community leader could hardly contain her delight as she welcomed visitors and excitedly said, "If God said, 'Dorah, are you ready?', I'd say 100% because of all that has happened up until this day! My prayers have been answered!"
A tree planting ceremony took place after the service commemorating 5 reverends who have passed away. Trees were planted for Reverend Nancy Charlton, Reverend Ralawe, Reverend Sobukwe, Reverend Mveke and Reverend Kolobile - all of whom made significant contributions to local congregations.
As the trees grow and St David's Church stands strongly into the future, this special day will be fondly remembered by the congregation both in the village and further afield.
