GRAAFF-REINET NEWS — Once again a very successful bazaar was held at St James’ Anglican Church last Friday, raising a substantial amount of money for church funds.
Those who entered the grounds from Somerset Street were greeted with the tempting aroma of boerewors rolls, which proved to be very popular. There was an attractive selection of plants, laid out very appropriately in the front garden, with the rest of the stalls inside the church hall. From even before the official starting time of 10.30am, many visitors were seen enjoying the scones in the tea garden.
Gary and Evette Holmes generously donated a pig to raffle – the winner has yet to be drawn for this. Several tables filled with a selection of books in excellent condition were set up in the hall, and on the opposite side, the white elephant/bric-a-brac tables were busy from the word go. Among these good quality used items were also several pieces of needlework at bargain prices.
The rest of the hall was devoted to food –always a best-seller at any bazaar! The pancake team flipped over 500 pancakes, generously dredged with cinnamon sugar. Many volunteers had obviously been busy baking, and the selection of cakes and savoury tarts sold very quickly. Packs of frozen venison, lamb and chicken were also snapped up by eager buyers.
Those with a sweet tooth were also able to indulge in a bowl of pudding without waiting for lunch!
The much-anticipated meal did not disappoint - succulent roast lamb with rice and vegetables, followed by puddings, and accompanied with home-made lemon syrup.
The ladies of the Women’s Fellowship, under the leadership of Felicity Minnaar and Evette Holmes, provided a wonderful morning of bargains and spoils for visitors from Graaff-Reinet and neighbouring towns.
