A resident of Zingisa Street in Thembalesizwe, who is working away, had left someone to look after her house. When she tracked him down and asked him about the missing items, he ran away. The case is still under investigation.
Three houses in Darling Street have been broken into during this period. On Christmas Day, jewellery and a Canon camera were taken from a house belonging to a local farmer. A glass panel on the front door was broken, and the suspect reached in an unlatched the door. The value of the stolen property was given as R15 000. On the same day, further along the street towards the edge of town, the security gate of a house belonging to an elderly resident was forced open, and the kitchen door was broken and kicked in.
The householder had gone out for lunch with friends, and it is thought that she might have disturbed the thief when she returned, as meat had been taken from the freezer and put on the table. Only a 2-litre bottle of oil and a shock stick were taken. The third case in Darling Street, in the same area, happened on December 22 when the owner was cleaning out his garage. He had taken his tools outside, and left home for a short while to go to the shops- on his return, tools to the value of R15 000 had been taken. A case of theft has been opened.
Two cases, of drunken driving and malicious damage to property, arose from an incident on December 23 when a man driving in Springbok Street, Lotusville, lost control of his car and smashed into a house. This resulted in several large cracks in the walls of the house.
A 50-year-old woman was arrested on December 23 at her home in Kudu Street, Lotusville, for being in possession of a large amount of dagga worth an estimated R20 000.
Also on December 23, there was a break-in at the Karroo Butchery in town. The suspect broke the front glass sliding door to gain entry, and took two laptops, meat, and some small change. This was later recovered and a suspect arrested after the ornament was found in his possession. The same man was arrested for another case of possession of suspected stolen property, which was found in his home. Two bags filled with groceries, cellphones and other goods were found, but the owner has not yet been traced. The police would like to remind residents not to leave items of value near an open window.
On December 27, animal feed and mealies were taken from a house in Blom Street in the agricultural area of town, after a window was forced open. The goods have been recovered and returned to the owner, and one man out of three alleged suspects has been arrested.
Two separate but similar cases of fraud and attempted bribery were opened after a road block on the N9 between Aberdeen and Graaff-Reinet. Police officials were stopping taxis travelling between the former Transkei and Cape Town and performing safety and other checks. In each of the cases, the driver produced a licence belonging to somebody else, and attempted to bribe the police official. The drivers are both from the former Transkei, and aged 22 and 24 years.
Also travel-related, a man was charged with reckless and negligent driving after he lost control of his car about 40km from Aberdeen on the R61 towards Beaufort West. After the vehicle overturned he suffered serious injuries and was taken to Beaufort West Hospital, along with two adult passengers. A four year old child who was also in the vehicle was unharmed.
