KAROO NEWS - There were two serious accidents in a matter of three days, only 5km apart on the notorious R61 between Aberdeen and Beaufort West.
The first and most serious happened on Friday 4 January at 23:00, about 50km from Aberdeen.
A silver VW Polo, travelling towards Beaufort West, collided head on with a Quantum minibus taxi.
According to other drivers, the Polo was traveling at high speed, overtaking many vehicles as it sped along.
The five people in the car were all members of one family, who were returning to Cape Town from the former Transkei.
One man (the driver) and one woman died at the scene of the accident, and another woman died on the way to Aberdeen Hospital. The other two passengers were taken to Aberdeen Hospital with serious injuries.
Only the driver and relief driver were in the taxi, which was on its way back to the former Transkei to collect passengers who were returning to work in Cape Town.
Both men sustained serious injuries, and were taken to Midland Hospital in Graaff-Reinet.
The second accident, at 13:20 on Monday 7 January, occurred about 45km from Aberdeen.
A blue Opel Astra, heading towards Beaufort West, left the road and overturned.
The three passengers were seriously injured, and taken to Aberdeen Hospital, but the driver was unharmed. It is thought that the occupants were returning to Cape Town.
