GRAAFF-REINET NEWS — Dr Lucinda Brandine Booysen from Klipplaat has made history by being the first female doctor to open a GP practice in Graaff-Reinet on Monday, August 15.
Dr LB Booysen graduated with a BSc degree at the University of the Free State in 2003. She was then accepted to study MBChB at the University of Pretoria in 2004 from which she graduated in 2009.
During her academic career, she received two Golden Key Awards from the above mentioned institutions for being in the top 10% of the highest achieving students in the degrees that she studied.
According to her father, from the age of 3, after a visit to the local GP, she told him that she wanted to become a doctor one day. She never gave up on her dream. In her youth, her parents had faced the difficult decision as to where to send her to commence her high school career.
A teacher from Brandovale Primary School in Klipplaat had told them about Union High School in Graaff-Reinet. Lucinda was then moved from an Afrikaans medium school to Union High School, an English medium school. This proved to be an excellent decision. She matriculated from Union High School at the age of 17.
After graduating with her MBChB from the University of Pretoria in 2009, she did her internship at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital from 2010 till 2011.
Thereafter, she did her community service at Midland Hospital in Graaff-Reinet in 2012. She prided herself in hard work and dedication to her patients.
Her parents, Marthinus and Selomie Booysen, and her younger sister, Chereze, have been her unwavering support throughout her career path. They are grateful that the Heavenly Father has kept her safe and guided her on her journey. Graaff Reinet welcomes its first female GP.
