GRAAFF-REINET NEWS — Cesare Anthony Kilian (48), who worked for Graaff-Reinet SAPS for many years, was found guilty recently of a case of theft from early last year.
Kilian rented a house in Steynsburg Street, Aberdeen, from January 1, 2016. It was agreed that some of the owner’s furniture could remain in storage in the garage for three months and that she would fetch it at the end of February to take to her new home in George. As Kilian was a SAPS employee, it was not expected that there would be any problems.
The first warning that the owner had that all was not well was when she received a phone call from a friend saying that they had seen some of her furniture in an antique shop in Graaff-Reinet. She came back to Aberdeen as soon as possible and was horrified to discover how many items were missing. It has been suggested that Kilian took the items to the antique shop, and possibly others, claiming that they had belonged to his late mother. Some of the pieces of furniture and household goods were later recovered, but not all. Kilian subsequently resigned from SAPS and now lives in Cradock.
When Kilian was found guilty of theft, it was expected that he would receive a custodial sentence, and many were horrified and felt let down when he was sentenced to a mere 18 months imprisonment, suspended for five years. The householder, who was the victim in this case, attended court every day but did not wish to comment.
