NATIONAL NEWS - The teacher at the centre of the confrontation that led to a Grade 12 learner at a high school in Jozini pouring boiling water on a fellow learner has been suspended for a separate matter.
According to The Witness, the KZN Education Department yesterday confirmed that the teacher could have impregnated two other learners from the same school.
Departmental spokesperson Muzi Mahlambi said that after a preliminary investigation following a boiling-water incident last week, signs were found that the person might be having sexual relations with several learners.
According to Mahlambi, the teacher allegedly impregnated two other learners from the same school.
Boiling-water incident
The investigation came about after the boiling-water incident that left a learner with serious burn wounds that landed her in hospital last week. She was burnt, allegedly by a fellow learner, after being accused of having an affair with the teacher.
Yesterday, the provincial police confirmed that a 17-year-old had been arrested.
Spokesperson Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo said the girl had been charged with assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
“She was charged and released on warning under the supervision of a guardian. She was also referred to social workers for assessment,” Ngcobo added.
Condition of the victim
The victim remains in a critical condition at Ngwelezane Hospital. She sustained severe burns from her lower back down to her legs and feet. The incident allegedly followed accusations that the victim was involved in a romantic relationship with the suspect’s boyfriend, the suspended teacher.
Both learners were part of a group of matric learners sleeping over at the school to prepare for their final examinations when the confrontation unfolded.
