KAROO NEWS - One of the measures announced by the Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma in an attempt to limit the spread of the Covid-19 virus is a ban on travel between provinces.
There will be some exceptions, including the transportation of fuel and essential goods, such as food, cleaning and hygiene products, and medical supplies, and emergency services personnel.
However for the ordinary citizen, the roads will be blocked, and they will not be able to travel between provinces except for emergency medical reasons.
In this area of the Eastern Cape, one of the closures which will have the most impact is the R61 between Beaufort West and Aberdeen. This is an extremely busy road, both for trucks and private vehicles. It is a main route from Cape Town to the former Transkei, and at busy periods, a constant stream of taxis is usually seen.
The N9 between George and Aberdeen is closed at Willowmore.
Between Graaff-Reinet and Colesburg, another major route to Bloemfontein and Gauteng, the N9/N10 is closed before Middelburg.
Many of these major roads also lead to farm access roads, and provision has been made for residents and farmers.
