NIEU-BETHESDA NEWS - An enthusiastic group of ladies who are passionate about crocheting gathered in Nieu-Bethesda this weekend to learn more about this colourful craft from master craftswoman, Doortjie Gersbach who hails from Montagu.
This creative getaway was organised by Antoinette Kriel, who is in the process of building a home in the village. Participants drove from as far as the Southern and Western Cape to participate in this wonderful workshop.
During what was probably the coldest week of the year, the ladies gathered each morning in the cosy lounge in front of the fireplace at ‘The Ibis’. To walk into this hub of colourful creativity was a treat – ladies were huddled around their crochet hooks, armed with a spectrum of yarns and wools, finely focused on various new techniques that Doortjie had taught them.
It can be said that “A crocheted piece is the lovely manifestation of a thought, expressed through hand, heart, hook and yarn.” (Francine Toukou).
Watching these ladies at work, was like watching the creation of little colourful bits of jewelery.
Each little treasure that they were creating, started from nothing but a movement of the hand around a piece of yarn with a hook. It appears that crocheting is the assembly of tiny knots with clever choices of colour, texture and pattern, that when pieced together after hours of conscious, meditative work, creates a masterpiece.
The group stayed in various guesthouses around the village, and enjoyed the sights and sounds that Nieu-Bethesda has to offer.
Antoinette is planning another crochet getaway in Nieu-Bethesda in the future. Anyone interested in being included in her mailing list can email her on firstname.lastname@example.org.
