GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - There is a possibility that municipal officials are purposefully damaging municipal infrastructure to get kickbacks from contractors.
Local municipal mayor, Deon de Vos, mentioned this at a special council meeting on 30 January. Graaff-Reinet SAPS Spokesperson, Captain Bradley Rawlinson, confirmed that this possibility is being investigated.
According to De Vos, this is a national modus operandi, and it is not impossible that the same is happening within the Dr Beyers Naudé Local Municipality.
"The lawlessness and indiscipline must stop. If things fall apart, it's me and [the council] that will be responsible," De Vos said in his speech.
Speaker Thembisa Nonnies said council are facing challenges with water and electricity supply.
"People are sitting out there, waiting for us to change their lives."
DA Shadow Deputy Minister for Public Works and Infrastructure, Samantha Graham Maré, reacted with disgust at the mayor's concern that officials can be suspected of damaging municipal infrastructure to pocket bribes from contractors.
"It is absolutely abhorrent that the mayor has alleged that people in the municipality would actually damage our infrastructure in order to profit from the repairs," Graham Maré told the Advertiser.
